Alaska man lists 18-foot hydraulic mecha on eBay

WASILLA Techies with at least 40-thousand dollars to spare can bid on a towering mecha that shoots flames and has red glowing eyes.
Carlos Owens Junior of Wasilla has listed his 18-foot handmade hydraulic exoskeleton on eBay.

The minimum bid for eBay Item Number 5593908816 is 35-thousand dollars, plus five-thousand dollars to ship the three-thousand pound structure from Alaska.

The 27-year-old apprentice ironworker says he's selling the rust-red machine to fund construction of his next project -- a mobile amphibious mecha that would run on wheels or tracks.

Owens took almost two years and more than 20-thousand dollars to construct his prototype mecha in his parents' back yard. Unlike robots, which are operated remotely, mechas are operated by the person riding inside the frame.

Even for eBay -- an online auction site -- the listing is unusual, to say the least.

Hani Durzy -- a spokesman for the San Jose, California-based company -- says there's not exactly a glut of 18-foot mechas on eBay.

3 Men Charged With Theft In eBay Scam

Three Houston-area men are wanted in connection with a scam involving the popular online auction Web site, eBay and stolen credit cards, officials told Local 2 in an exclusive story Wednesday.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office said Brandon Jewa Hickman, 22, Tommy Charles Carter, 22, and Kiniskiu Dejuan Morris, 22, stole people's credit card numbers and opened several eBay accounts to sell electronics. But officials said the men never had the electronics, so when bidders would win the auction and send payment, the men cashed the checks without sending any merchandise.

Hickman, Carter and Morris are charged with felony theft and are still on the loose.

Officials said that the suspects stole more than $61,000 from eBay customers who paid by check or money order and never received merchandise.

Charlotte Wyman found out she was a victim when auction winners began contacting her.

"I don't even mess with eBay. (Someone said,) 'We bought something from you for 400-something-dollars on eBay and we haven't got our product.' I said, 'Well, it wasn't me because I don't even use a computer or nothing,'" she said.

Her credit card number had been stolen to set up a fraudulent eBay account, officials said.

It's a popular scam.

"People place items for auction on eBay and never provide the item to the buyer," said Valerie Turner of the Harris County District Attorney's Office. "If you are contacted because you bid on an item and you didn't win the bid, but now they want to make a deal with you, do not deal with that person."

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to arrests and convictions in this case.

Teen fraudster gets detention for duping 100 eBay buyers

BBC News reports that "a teenage fraudster who conned customers of the internet auction site eBay out of £45,000 has been sent to a detention centre for a year. Phillip Shortman, now 18, of New Inn, Pontypool, had already admitted 21 counts of fraud at a prior hearing."

During his trial at Newport, magistrates had heard Shortman, who was 17 when he committed the offences, had deceived more than 100 eBay customers over a 13-month period.

He had spent the money on top of the range computer equipment, hi-fis and flat-screen televisions, as well as designer clothes and hiring stretch limousines for himself and his friends.

EMPTY WHITE ENVELOPE auction on eBay is back -- and it's even better!

I've reposted the empty white envelope auction on eBay at 9:14 am, taking care to choose my words so it won't get shot down again by eBay management. But it was taken down by eBay again because of the words "no mystery" on the item title.

This is the new address of the EMPTY WHITE ENVELOPE. You can never put a good envelope down! :)

The second time I posted the item (before it was taken down the second time around), it got a bid from lora_y35 within two hours of posting.

She was the same lady who made the first bid in the original listing last March 12. You can see her items for sale here:

She made the bid 1 hour and 10 minutes after I re-posted the Empty White Envelope.

According to an email from eBay, my first listing for the Empty White Envelope was taken off because I had included the phrase "Not Mystery Envelope" in the Item Title. So I took that off to comply with the policy against keyword spamming, but apparently, even the words "no mystery" didn't sit well with them.

Due to these developments, the WHITE EMPTY ENVELOPE is no longer just a white envelope. It has taken a life of its own, and it is a story going to be written.

I'm preparing a eBook that will document the story of the auction --and the story BEHIND the story. I've already designed the
cover for it. You can see it to your left.
